![]() Any character who is looking at a player utilizing bullet-time will benefit from the same effect. While conceptually it can seem a little odd that some players are moving at a fraction of the speed of others, Max Payne 3 solves this problem by using line-of-sight to dictate who is and isn't moving in slow motion. Rockstar has detailed the multiplayer gameplay, however, describing their implementation of the bullet time mechanics in the online space. MultiplayerĪs in Max Payne 2, the third installment features multiplayer support, though we were unable to give it a try in our time with the game. While most modern shooters rely on cover while you regenerate health, Max Payne 3 will punish you for relying on it. While this gives you a short reprieve during a firefight, we found the enemy AI to usually respond to this tactic by lobbing grenades and closing down space immediately-punishing the player for not utilizing bullet time to its full effect. This, along with most of the bad guys being generally the same height, sometimes makes the most effective tactic simply strafing with the reticle at head height, using bullet time to time your headshots.Īlso of note is Rockstar's implementation of cover mechanics, letting Max fire from the safety of natural barriers built into the level. One thing we noticed in our time with the game (and in Rockstar's videos around the 1:00 mark) is the lack of recoil on most of your weapons. This combination allows you to even the odds when you suddenly realize there's one of you and, oh, 30 bad guys who want to hurt you. Your best tactic in most firefights is Max's "shootdodge" ability, diving horizontally around the map, usually activating bullet time at the same time. While sensitivity is adjustable, we found that it felt a little stiff by default, making fine adjustments (and live firing without bullet-time) more difficult. ![]() You move Max with the left stick, with the right control stick used to adjust the camera and thus his aim. The controls for Max Payne 3 are an amalgamation of modern Rockstar games and the Remedy Max Payne titles, with a free-aim technique and a reticle in the center of the screen. This gives you a little more leeway to focus on killing off your enemies, in case you lose track of your health bar. If you are able to kill off the enemy that killed you before your bullet time runs out, the game automatically uses your painkiller to restore some health so you can continue the fight. This engages if you take a fatal blow with a painkiller still in your inventory and some bullet time available. Of important note there, though, is the "last man standing" feature. This results in many tougher sections feeling like small puzzles, with you having to usually clear entire areas before finding ways to restore some health. ![]() The difficulty in Max Payne 3 is generally managing your limited health and painkiller resources. Managing your bullet time is an important element in surviving, as your health can only be increased by using painkillers it won't regenerate after a few seconds as in many other shooters. You can disengage this at any time, at which time the gauge begins to recharge. This is monitored by a gauge in the right side the screen that quickly depletes once engaged. At any time you can engage slow-motion by pressing the right control stick to line up headshots, giving you a crucial edge on your opponents. The majority of events in Max Payne 3 involve Max moving through indoor and outdoor environments, ambushing groups of enemies. You're allowed to carry several weapons at a time, but you're limited to either one two-handed weapon (such as a shotgun) or the ability to dual-wield single-handed weapons like sub-machine guns or pistols. You free aim using an on-screen reticle (similar to other Rockstar games like Grand Theft Auto), with the right stick maneuvering the camera behind Max. Max Payne 3 is a third-person action shooter, with slow-motion bullet time mechanics and the ability to leap and dodge to avoid your enemies. This results in an interesting gameplay balance for an action game you have to survive until you find another batch of pain meds, but your best weapon by far is to expose yourself with a combination of bullet time and dodging. Also of note is the fact that health in Max Payne 3 isn't regenerative, meaning the only way to stay alive is by ingesting more and more painkillers. Like any good Max Payne game, Max Payne 3 relies heavily on the tried and true standard of leaping headlong from cover, sub-machine guns blaring while you dodge every bullet that comes your way.
