There are a few quirks, but Fedora and Ubuntu have both made leaps and bounds in supporting standard GUI installs on Apple hardware in the last few years. Since you're obviously using Apple hardware, disregard people saying it's impossible to run linux on apple computers. I know it seems like a lot to process, and you probably won't make the leap at this point in time, but keep it in mind. There are a lot of utilities/software suites that aren't written for anything else, and if they are available, it's much the same story as above to get them to work properly. Try setting up the GNU tools.Īlso, linux and the application community surrounding it have been dedicated to making software for programming minded people for over twenty years. ![]() The number of users making programs to make installing current versions of python on OS X make it easy. If you thought the first bit sounded painful, it wasn't. You'll have to do all of this all over again. Next, suppose you want to get into a little bit of c++, etc. Next, you'll have to deal with configuring any IDE/editor you decide to use with your rigged up install. Next, you'll probably want a python specific program to automate adding modules to your sequestered install, as well as taking care of all of the environmental variables you'll need to set. You'll probably want to install a third party package manager like MacPort (or the currently favored flavor) so you can easily update. ![]() In order to not break anything in your operating systems internals, you'll have to make a separate install. Eventually, you're going to run into something that requires a newer version of python than what is currently packaged with OS X. I too started programming on OS X, and ran into difficulties almost immediately. Before people accuse me of advocating throwing out the kitchen because the blender is broken, let me explain. Not a troll, I swear to god, but my best piece of advice is to run a separate linux installation to do any serious programming work.
